Money in Uruguay is called the Peso. It is worth approximately $.05 USD = 1 peso, so around 20 pesos to the dollar. Every time I am looking at a price, I need to do a quick calculation in my head to see if it is reasonable. The first time you get a restaurant check for $1,400, it gets your attention. That is until you realize it is about U$S 75, not bad when feeding five people. The most common denominations are the 20, 50, 100, 200, and 1000 peso bills, as well as the ever present 10 peso coin. 10 pesos won't buy you much, but it is a convenient tip for taxi drivers.
On the back of the 10 peso coin it reads "Sean Los Orientales Tan Ilustrados Como Valientes". I ran that through Google Translate and it comes back as "Are the brave as oriental as illustrated?". Funny thing to put on a coin. Must lose a little something in the translation.
